Conservative Treatment for Venous Insufficiency

Conservative treatments are things that you can do on your own to help manage the discomfort of venous insufficiency. They may be helpful early in the course of the disease when symptoms are still mild. A trial of conservative treatment is frequently mandated by insurance companies and Medicare before vein interventions can be offered. If it is required, the team at Aleman Vein Center can help to initiate this treatment trial.

Conservative treatments for varicose veins may also be the best option for pregnant women or those who cannot undergo medical vein treatment due to extremes of age or other illness. Unfortunately, conservative treatments do not stop the progression of vein disease or make varicose veins go away.

Common conservative strategies include:

  • medical compression stockings

  • elevation of the legs above the heart

  • exercise and weight loss

  • over the counter pain medications such Tylenol or ibuprofen

  • avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting

  • herbal medications - look for those containing micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) or micronized diosmin

If you continue to have problems after attempting these measures, you should contact us here at Aleman Vein Center in Atlanta to see if you are a candidate for definitive treatment of your underlying condition.
